Hi. Looking for travel advice from London. Seems like BA down to Accra and then find a connection ?
Somebody said to us that, ‘You must visit.’
Has anybody visited with first hand experience?
ie Don’t bother or you must go.
    Thanks.

It’s been on my list for a while now. I posted for some advice previously and got some really really useful feedback…

Read in various places only good to go in June or Dec ish, so should be timed appropriately.

Easiest is flying TAP via Lisbon. Ghana with BA is “harder” as you will need to get a visa to transit, as a minimum. I think there are also flights via another West African country, though again should check visas. Also, I know from people that have visited that English is not widely spoken at all.

OH is Portuguese and has suggested, when we do go that we look at starting in Portugal and booking through a travel agent there as apparently there are frequently some good deals to be had. Again, unless you speak PT, this might be a bit more tricky.

Summer is good too, July and August. Also January is fine.

Things have drastically changed now and many foreign owned businesses are abandoning STP. HBD Principe, run and owned by Mark Shuttleworth is leaving. They were one of the biggest investors in tourist infrastructure. As in many cases, the local authorities and people have got a bit too greedy… Infrastructure was not that good anyway, now it’s only going to get worse. Also electric power supply issues are more prevalent than before…

@redlilly I found deals from Portuguese agents not as good as they appear on paper. It’s usually for some undesirable times of the year during peak rainy season.

Interesting… thank you for that insight and those of the changing nature of the islands.

Haven’t checked up on either since we last spoke about it on the thread copied above, as circumstances have changed a lot (baby arrived in September and OH understandably not keen to go to STP with baby).

A shame that the islands authorities got greedy. Fingers crossed for the future.

There’s flights to TMS via Luanda (Angola) and Libreville (Gabon), for the latter, there’s a direct from Casablanca (RAM – bookable with Avios points).

Of course this doesn’t take into consideration the entry requirements for any of the countries mentioned in here even for transit, however the options for travelling to São Tomé and Príncipe are heavily limited – don’t even think about any other means, like ships !

Have you actually checked prices and schedule for flights to STP from Luanda and/or Libreville? It’s not very feasible unless you are planning a wider West Africa trip.

There’s not daily flights from both cities, however if one wishes to visit São Tomé and Príncipe, the options for getting there are very much limited…

The costs of flights is something that needs to be factored in when constructing the holiday, there’s not a lot that can be done about that element, and you’d be hard pressed to find points seats, especially more so getting around 1pence per point value !

It’s actually surprisingly easy to find award seats on TAP via Star Alliance members. Flew on Miles&More, Aeroplan and Aegean miles. It’s actually the best and cheapest way to fly there at peak times even if you have to purchase all the miles outright in a sale.
