Yesterday, OH used my Plat referral link to apply for his own Plat (100k for him, 18k for me and hopefully a further 12k for him by adding me as supp before the end of Oct).
Card was granted at about 2pm, having completed the process in full without saving & returning or any other non-standard activity.
About 4hrs later, I got an Amex email to say that time was running out for me to use my bonus referral link!
After the card being granted, I hadn’t had a thought of whether the process had completed properly but now I’m worried something went wrong. I have screenshots of the process, including the specific page with my name and invitation on it but from all I read here about Amex upholding their end of bargains after they make an error I’m not confident. If we miss out on the updated bonuses I’ll feel seriously miffed.
What would dear readers do?
I can’t see any connection between the two. The referral bonus is not a one off, you can earn it multiple times, so receiving a generic email about it does not mean it hasn’t been used previously.
Thanks @AndrewT; coincidences have a way of appearing much more than just that don’t they? The email did specify “limited time offer…until 14th October…18k bonus” not just any referral at any time and I’ve never had any such reminders from Amex before. Just seemed very odd.
Honestly I wouldn’t worry about it. I’ve been presented with the “approved application” page in the past, only to receive an email minutes later asking me to complete my application. Eventually though I’ve received the email confirmation with an application number included. Amex’s IT is all over the place. Then again, so are many other financial institutions’ IT.
OK, I’m officially not going to worry any further, thanks @rum.
Do let us know how you get on though as your feedback will help others in the future.
@rum – not exactly closure feedback as it’s only a fortnight into the 6 month spend period but OH has had an email encouraging him to start spending in order to achieve his “100k points offer”. So, that implies the referral bonus went through OK as otherwise it would have been the 80k offer for cold applications.
I haven’t had any further contact from Amex about my referral.
He’s also bagged the 12k for adding me as supplementary 😆.
Will update after the 6 month spend period.
Thanks for following up, @Saltrams.
Indeed that is good news. Whatever happens, do not lose that email as it will count as evidence should Amex not pay up for whatever reason. It’s good to get in to the habit of taking precautions.
Do let us know how you get on though as your feedback will help others in the future.
Outcome update, January 2026:
Hit the target, received the bonuses (80k plus 20k), had to get a refund on something, bonuses removed.
Hit the target again shortly thereafter, bonuses credited again, no refunds on the horizon and OH has had a confirmation email too.
So, all in all, pretty happy with most of the Avios needed to get us to Perth on QR next winter 😆
