Received my new Business Plat card and activated it on the App. The reward points showed -120k!
Called support who said it was due to a refund on previous (already cancelled) card taking the overall spend on that card down below the spend requirement for the sign up bonus points. There was no way around it as the card had already been cancelled.
Beware of refunds after cancellation!
Rough luck there. My first cards I closed successfully with negative balance, maybe this has now changed? At 1pt per £1 on that card you’d have to put some mighty amount of spend through that to get it back to positive. I would take what’s of use and jump ship.

Is it “rough luck” or just amateur churning?
Have you asked them to point out where in the Ts&Cs it says this? Though clearly they hold almost all the cards.

The terms are perfectly clear. The OP didn’t meet the terms of a welcome bonus owing to a refund, but as the MR had already been taken out of the MR account, there’s now an overdraft that needs to be paid off.
It would appear to be worse than an own goal as it’s entirely predictable. If people want to churn, do so competently! Think a bit, think about the longer term, don’t cut things too fine and don’t be too greedy. Otherwise, like here, a big future SUB lost, probably for peanuts.
What happens if OP cancels this card and applies after two years (doesnt matter which MR card as they go back into the same pot)? Does the negative balance continue forever?
That’s a tricky situation. If in your shoes, I would probably cancel the card and wait 13 months or so or whenever eligible for next bonus on Business or Personal card. Also, in the new application I would use a different Email address or if you have a 2nd phone number probably that as well. All the best.

very unlikely to work, this is a 235 billion company, not a micky mouse one

Unless Amex knows exactly who you are, your application won’t be approved. The suggestion of the email/telephone is the digital equivalent of putting on a wig and glasses; daft.
Different MR accounts do exist. I had them once I had a Business and Personal card together. I had to contact AMEX to get them merged. Rob has 2 MR accounts as well if I’m not mistaken. So, whatever is the AMEX algorithm, there are some exceptions. I am just suggesting options to increase the odds in OP’s favor. Since the current one is a Business Plat card, I would strongly recommend applying for a Personal one next.

yes because why would they merge a company MR points with a personal MR balance from the get go, duh
My personal plat that arrived today and put on app also shows the large negative balance.
Will call up to argue but otherwise will go dormant on amex. They probably think nearly 1m points this year is enough.

That happened to me recently, applied for business Amex. The MR accounts were merged automatically!

Two examples above for you why they would merge Company MR points with a Personal one. duh… ?
Please do reply back when you’ve any helpful advice for the OP.
So, a bit of variation on a theme
I had my Amex accoutn cancelled (Platinum Business and BA rewards) cancelled due to not complying with terms and conditions.
The first offence was using the business card for a persoanl transaction. The conversation on the phone at that time was pretty severe but i was allowed to continue. However my card was blocked on 19th, on phoning I got through to credit review team and they advised that a decision had been made due to a second offence – making a purchase with my personal card from a business linked to me (not the business in whose name the Platinum card is issued).
No chance of appeal, no chance to explain the situation (I thought it was perfectly transaparent to purchase something that the company of which I am a director sells as a ‘punter’ rather than any other process). The transaction had been blocked at the time of the attempt and i proceeded to complete the transaction with another card. (It was viewed as attempoted factoring)
You would think that with the resources at Amex disposal they would have sufficient checks and measures in place to prevent non-compliant transactions – which was proved in this case.
It just seems bitter tha there is no conversation about it, they just make a decision and thats that. They penalise you for what they think you are doing rather then any ignorance/genuine mistake on the customers part
Anyway, they told me the letter being sent will refer to terms and conditions which state that any Membership rewards will be forefeited and there will be no pro rata refund of any card fees!
Gutted as I had 145000 reward points sat waiting while we decide who we were flying with.
However, I phoned back with another question and the new guy was adamant that as the cacnellation is due to take place in January I can
a) Proactively choose to cancel the card, and thus be eligible for pro-rata refund (thought the account will still be marked as a dishonorable discharge)
b) At least use the points balance to pay off some of the cash balance. On checking the latter out I noted that I was still able to complete a transfer. So I did – to Avios – and the transaction is completed.
My question is, will Amex “claw these points back” in the nature of a negative points balance? Or are they safe? THe last agent implied I was still at iberty to use them and they would only be forfeited if they were still on the account on the day of actual closure. Of course that would only be relevant if tnhey ever accepted this naughty boy back
@doningtonphil – it sounds as though you have been very fortunate to have been able to get your points out. Many have reported an immediate block.
The use of a personal or business card at a company you own or control is an absolute no no. It’s even written into the terms of the new Currensea cards. Personal spend on a business card and vv is a bit greyer.
There’s no reason to think that Amex will or has the ability to claw back points and as you probably won’t be allowed to apply for a new card for a while, I doubt there will be a negative balance either.
The situation at the top of the thread doesn’t have a lot of detail but would appear to be where someone has just gone over the spend threshold to trigger a bonus, likely well inside the time period, taken the points out and cancelled the card very quickly and then received a refund, still inside the spend period. Normally the points would get clawed back but be re-awarded when the amount of the refund was spent again which couldn’t be done because the card was closed. Hence the MR overdraft that lingers in the system.
