This was not BA, but I was not sure where to place this.
I was delayed by 24 hours as the airline (Jet2) decided that it could not fly due to bad weather forecast.
It cancelled all flights out of Funchal (Madeira) on the 5th of Jan, and rescheduled them for the 6th of Jan.
Ordinarily I would see that as meaning that it falls outside of the rules for compensation, however, they were the only airline who didn’t fly into/out of Funchal for weather reasons on that day.
So should I put in a claim?Sorry, you spotted my mistake
Yes, it was indeed Funchal, I have now edited the original post to make more sense. If you believe you have a case for compensation then make a claim. Persinally I wouldn’t bother as Funchal is a tricky airport and often has diversions ir cancellations due to bad weather.
Jet2 is liable for the extra accomodation and food costs you incurred in suffering a 24hour delay assuming you were stuck in Funchal.
It was almost certainly a proactive weather replan so highly unlikely that UK261 compensation will be due. As @AJA states, this doesn’t remove the requirement for right of care. Up to you whether you put a claim in.
@ClubSmed – the fact other flights operated isn’t a relevant consideration, it’s only the proximate reason for the cancellation of your flight that matters and it’s worth bearing in mind that different aircraft/airlines have different tolerances or certifications that may or may not allow them to fly. Also, most airlines don’t just cancel flights for fun – while it may be inconvenient for you to be stuck in Madeira for a day, the disruption and cost to the airline is huge, with aircraft passengers and crew all out of position and additionally paying for everyone’s hotel and food.
My in-laws were also delayed for 24 hours outbound due to the same. Personally I would claim, because I don’t see how “advanced cancellations” >24 hours in advance due to weather that may or may not happen is a weather-related event. As the OP stated, every other airline/flight operated perfectly.
I’d imagine you’d need to gamble at MCOL to have any chance of getting any compensation (not an expensive or difficult process, and since it sets no precedent maybe Jet2 will find it cheaper just to compensate you).
