Forums Payment cards American Express Downgrading Platinum

  • 25 posts

    Hi all

    I am approaching the end of my first year of with the platinum Amex credit card and considering down grading to Gold as I dont think I make enough use of the benefits to justify the £650 fee and i already have the BA premium card. But I had some questions.
    If I downgrade would the first year be free or would that only apply to a new application?

    There is a good referral offer at the minute. If I refer someone now would I need to retain my platinum card until the referee met the spend requirements to receive the 25,000 points or would these be applied to a gold card if I downgraded?

    Are there any other things I should consider in downgrading?

    Thanks

    First year is free even for downgrades.
    On the second qn, the referral bonus is paid upon approval and is not dependent on referee meeting spend requirements. The spend requirements are applicable only for sign up bonus for referee.

    If you don’t receive referral bonus for a week or two after approval, call or chat the customer support.

    Jumping in here, @BBbetter, have you a recent data point on referral points posting? When I referred (from Gold) earlier this year it took exactly 3 months and one day for me to get referral points. (I didn’t chase up as I’d assumed referee had done something daft like shut down all tracking.)
    The current T&Cs say this “It may take up to ten weeks for your bonus to be credited to your Account, if your friend or family member’s Card application is successful.”

    @strickers
    reported a few days ago re referral bonus “Amex have confirmed that it’s tracked and have told me 8-10 weeks”

    Can now update with latest experience: referred (Gold to Platinum), application made and approved Sunday, referral points arrived today, 48 hours later. Happy days.

    They don’t know what they’re talking about. I have down this many times and I have never had to pay a fee on the Gold card. Unless I kept it for >12 months of course.

    It seems the physical platinum card still works after downgrading to gold. Don’t know for how long, but it’s been a few months now.
