Heading to Buenos Aires on 28th for a short stay before our Antarctic cruise. We have two nights at the Regal Pacific Puerto Madero then one night in Colombia del Sacramento, 2 nights ( inc New Years Eve) in Montevideo, 4 nights in Bariloche then finally two nights back in BA at the Emperador before flying down to Ushuaia to start the cruise.
I would love to see a Tango show and would be very grateful for any recommendations. I assume Buenos Aires is the place for that.
Also grateful for any other recommendations for the places on our trip. Thank you in advance.

@Annie – for tango shows in Buenos Aires, it rather depends on your taste. There are glitzy full on, big shows of which Señor Tango is probably one of the better ones, more low key traditional ones of which Piazzolla is good (you may see mention of Esquina Carlos Gardel, but I think that’s now closed). You should be able to book later, show only – the dinners won’t be great.

Our personal favourite is the Rojo Tango show at the Faena Hotel, a sight in itself and close to Puerto Madero. It’s a much smaller venue, all red velvet and the dancers are right next to you and probably the only show where the dancers look like they mean it!

For Bariloche, I’m sure you will schedule a drive around the Llao Llao Peninsula (great buffet lunch at the big hotel with fabulous views from the terrace), the cable car near to town does offer great views of the lake and surrounding area and the ski area is good for hikes of all different levels if the weather is good.

@JDB Thank you. Will try the Rojo Tango.

The other place to see tango dancers is in a Milonga. Like a local dance hall.

@Annie – sounds like a fab holiday. We went to South America last year for the first time and loved it. After a second visit this year, Ushuaia is still on my list of places to visit! We stayed at the Regal Pacific Puerto Madero last year. It was behind the HIX and convenient for our late arrival from Montevideo with Buquebus (just across the street) – although like you we went to Colonia first. We went with Colonia Express.

I learnt to tango in my late teens when my Dad thought it was a good idea for his twin daughters to learn ballroom and Latin American dancing. We were fortunate to be living in South London where there were well known dance schools with formation teams competing internationally. My sister and friends stuck with the dancing whilst I went travelling!

One of the top things on my list was to see a tango in Argentina and I eventually persuaded my reluctant OH (with two left feet) to join me. However on our first day in South America, a Sunday in Lima (with our daughter), we came across what I think @qc calls a Milonga – the locals dancing. They were outside in the park and for me it was wonderful to watch. Possibly because they saw me and daughter dancing on the sidelines, the locals invited us to join them. OH was horrified, but stayed to watch. What an experience! On the Sunday we were in Buenos Aires we walked to the San Telmo market and were fortunate to see locals dancing en route – I think it seems to be a Sunday event and in Uruguay too. After talking to fellow travellers and the experiences we’d had, I decided not to go to see the professional dancers after all (too much like Come Dancing). If you’re interested in atmosphere and locals dancing, I would definitely do some research and try to visit the location where they’re being held (probably on a Sunday). Enjoy your trip – you’ll have a great time.

I just got back from Buenos Aires. My advice would be to get a SUBE card and use the buses to get around – super cheap and the route network is clearly marked on Google Maps. Also, they have a docked bike hire system which is a great way to see the city – traffic is not bad and there are lots of segregated bike lanes. Download the Ecobici app and register as a tourist.

I loved the neighbourhoods of Palermo Soho (bars, restaurants and shops), Recoleta (Parisian chic / Evita’s mausoleum) and La Boca (home to Boca Juniors and great atmosphere on a match day).

If you have an extra few days a trip to Iguazu Falls is magical.

Agree about SUBE cards – we used them in Bariloche. But as you don’t appear to have much time in Buenos Aires, you could take the hop on hop off bus to get a feel for the city. There was an office and bus stop for the yellow bus just up the hill from Buquebus and the Regal Pacific. We often saw staff/buses there when we walked past. I think there was also a red bus.

Does Uber operate from EZE ? Would that be the best way to get into town?

Yes, Uber operates from EZE and it will cost in the region of ARS40,000 to Recoleta. There are plentiful taxis outside the terminal as well. We usually book with Tienda Leon which is a bit more expensive but we have found them to be very reliable and one can order a van if you have lots of luggage.

Uber works great – you can pre-book and give it your flight number; the driver will be waiting when you arrive.

    Thank you both.
One final question if I may. Would like a hotel close to EZE for our final night after the cruise. Doesn’t need to be in the city as we will have had time there before. Any suggestions please ?

I don’t know about ariport hotels but I stayed at NH Collection Jousten which looks like it’s close to the cruise ship port.

There’s lots of restaurants around the harbour. The hotel was fine – does a good breakfast and is about 30 minutes in an Uber to EZE.

Thanks but our cruise is from Ushuaia and so will be flying back from there to EZE.

There aren’t really any proper options – even the Marriott which is probably the least bad option calls itself Ezeiza Airport but is 12km away. I don’t know if it’s maybe an option to change your Ushuaia flight to one that arrives at Aeroparque (and ideally a non stop one, not via El Calafate) and spend the night in the city which is only 15 minutes or so from AEP. Alternatively, it is probably worth just coming into the city from Ezeiza to have a better evening than hanging around one of the Ezeiza hotels.

Yes I’m on same cruise booked for February 2027 I’m going with PONANT as they don’t charge single supplement on some of their cruises which might be useful info for a solo traveler in the future, so I’m busy planning it all now.Annie do a little trip report when you are back please if you can, have a fab time.
